Meat Ball Curry (Caril de Almondegas de Carne)

One of the most delicious goan delicacies is the Meat Ball Curry, not just the flavour, but the texture and feel of the meat as well leaves one craving for more. Ingredients
  1. - 1 lb beef, ground
  2. - 1 tbsp Bengal gram flour (besan) or bread crumbs
  3. - 3 tbsp Green coriander, chopped
  4. - 2 tbsp Vegetable oil
  5. - 1 medium Onion, finely sliced
  6. - 6-8 Curry leaves
  7. - 1 large Tomato, chopped
  8. - 1½ tsp Salt
  9. - 2 tbsp Vinegar
Spice paste
  1. - 8 Kashmiri chilies
  2. - 2 tsp Coriander seeds
  3. - ½ tsp Cumin seeds
  4. - 8 Black peppercorns
  5. - ½ tsp Poppy seeds
  6. - 5 Cloves
  7. - 1” Cinnamon stick
  8. - ¾ tsp Turmeric powder
  9. - 6 cloves Garlic, minced
  10. - 1” Ginger, minced
  11. - 1¼ Coconut, grated
Instructions
  1. For the spice paste, grind all the ingredients mentioned with a little water to a smooth paste
  2. Grind the meat with 3 tbsp of the spice paste till smooth. Add the Bengal gram flour or bread crumbs slices of bread, green coriander and ½ tsp salt; mix well. Make meat balls about 1” size
  3. Heat the oil in a large pan; saute the onion till soft and golden brown
  4. Add the curry leaves and the remaining spice paste; stir-fry for a few minutes
  5. Add the tomato and saute for a few minutes until soft and oil begins to separate
  6. Add 2 cups water and bring the mixture to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes
  7. Drop the meat balls in carefully and cook for 10 minutes or until cooked
  8. Add the vinegar and cook for 2 minutes. Adjust seasoning if needed
  9. Remove from heat
Notes
  1. Serve with hot white rice or Arroz com Coco (Coconut rice)
