From watching the sunset on the seafront to waking up to the sounds of birds chirping.  From exploring the small towns to dancing the night away, one can have a number of experiences in Goa. This being so, Goa’s popularity increases by the day!

As it is while going to any place for a vacation, one of the main concerns is the accommodation available. Tourists are now opting for houses / flats on rent, cottages or the new and upcoming coco beach huts. This is bringing about a whole new trend in accommodation in Goa.

Coco beach huts are small cabins made out of wood situated right on the beach itself. It usually consists of 1 to 2 rooms. Palolem beach in the South Goa has various kinds of coco beach huts, two of them being Abel Cressida Coco Huts and high tide coco huts. The huts are usually painted bright colors which make them very attractive. Some of them are ground floor while others are at least eight feet above the ground. Their prices are reasonably low.  The coco huts are clean with spotless linen, comfy beds and hot water.  Some rooms also air conditioned.

Some of the best advantages of the coco beach huts are that their built on the beach itself so one can experience living near the shore.  One can watch the sun go down while relaxing near their doorstep with a chilled beer in hand, or go to bed hearing the waves crashing against the shore and wake up to the sound and sight of the beach!

Renting villas are also popular among tourists. The advantage of villas is that it can house more than one family since they usually are around 4 to 5 bedrooms. Big families or those that vacation with friends can rent a villa and spilt the cost of it among them. Villas also have well equipped kitchens (for those that would like to prepare meals) its own garden, terraces and most of the time its own swimming pool. This allows one to enjoy and relax privately without other guests around as would be there in a hotel. Some villas also have services provided like renting a scooter or car, Wi-Fi, housekeeping, spa treatment and 24 hour security.  The Noble House is one such elegant Villa, located in the seaside village of Palolem in South Goa.

Cheap and Reasonable Accommodation

Cottages are also another options chosen if for nothing else than their reasonably cheaper prices. This is more convenient for those travelling alone or with another companion. All the basic amenities are available like clean room and washroom, hot water and air condition. For those that prefer to spend their time outdoors, cottages are perfect for a nominal price. Jymis cottage situated on Colva beach is a stone’s throw away from the beach.

Tourists are now also beginning to stay in flats/apartments rented out by the owner. These flats are usually in high rise buildings situated close to the ocean.  Salida Luxury Apartments are a pair of exclusive serviced apartments in the newly developed Palolem Garden Estate complex in Canacona, south Goa. These south Goa luxury apartments are ideally located close to Patnem, Palolem, Agonda, Rajbag and Galijibaga beaches. South Goa Dream Apartment is located in the Ruby Residency Complex in Chaudi – Canacona, Goa. These service apartments are only a 5 min drive to both Palolem and Patnem beaches. The apartments contain all the basic necessities’ and more. Housekeeping and laundry services are also provided. In addition, the apartments usually include service lifts, swimming pool, gym, children’s play area, and 24hr security.

Vacationing in a house or bungalow lends a certain charm to one’s holiday. These rented houses or bungalows are usually amidst lovely nature, palm trees and lovely sunsets. The houses are usually of the Goan/Portuguese architecture which has a ‘balcao’ (sit out) at the entrance for one to sit and enjoy with a cup of tea. They are usually situated in and around villages close to the beach side hence It is perfect for a family with kids or only couple, who’d love to experience a quiet and peacefully holiday right in the middle of a Goan village. The Yellow House is a super modern apartment house, located in the seaside village of Palolem in South Goa. Colomb Bay Beach House is a lovely traditional Goan beach house located in Colomb bay, only a 5 min walk to both Palolem and Patnem beaches.

Families in Goa are also now renting out their Portuguese style ancestral houses to those who wish to. The houses are built in the 19th century and have had renovations done to it over the years and are now a stunning blend of eastern and western antiques and contemporary furnishings and colors found only in India. The Pintos ancestral house built in 1929 is your perfect holiday haunt, right on the Candolim beach in North Goa. It is perfect for a weekend getaway or rather a weeklong getaway!

Apart from these there are also out of the way lodging for those who want a unique experience. Cabo Cabana located on the banks of the River Mandovi is tucked away in an almost Invisible corner at the very edge of the river overlooking Panjim City in the bustling village of Betim. They are eco-friendly Boutique Resort comprising of two log cabins built with all the Canadian spruce. Cabo Cabana guarantees total and complete privacy.

A number of travelers, especially foreigners, prefer to spend a fairly longer period of time from a month to as many as six months at the leisurely pace of life in Goa. For such a stay, it is best to rent houses or rooms by the month, or season. Rents usually vary from area to area and even village to village, but you can expect to get accommodation for around Rs 1000/- to Rs 5000/- a day depending upon the season and the facilities included in the cost.

It is also worth considering sharing such long stay accommodation with two or three people so as to bring down the costs. Most importantly, reserve such long-term accommodation well in advance to get a good bargain as most such houses and rooms are rented by visitors who return to the same house year after year and as such get first preference.

Colva Beach

Colva Beach

Colva Beach – Spectacle of Sea, Sand & Sky

This beach is a spectacle of sea, sand and sky, the perfect blend of an enchanting natural harmony, weaving their magic spell on the visitors. It was known for its scenic beauty. This is part of Salcete, Goa’s only Catholic majority sub-district. Once a very hospitable area, now relations are getting monetized thanks to tourism.

Its stretch is around 2.4 km; the beach consists of the finest powder white sand and is lined along its shore by coconut palms. It has been one of the famous beaches of Goa, and is a threat to those who want to have a lovely sunbathe and a peaceful relaxed moment. It is gradually changing pace with the century, so it has become noisy although still a beautiful beach to sit on. Recently in the 21st century, Colva has 3 subdivided beaches Colva beach which is the prime beach, Sunset beach (towards Betalbatim) which is less congested and then Baywatch beach (towards Benaulim at Sernabatim). Colva is approximately 8 kilometers from Margao and 40 kilometers from Panajim. The closest railway station is in Margao followed by Vasco da Gama. The airport is Dabolim Airport (GOI) at Vasco da Gama, Goa. The neighboring villages are Betalbatim and Benaulim,

Colva beach at sunset coconut treeIn the colonial days it used to be the resting area for Margao’s high society, who would visit Colva for their change of air. Today the area that is reminiscent of the luxurious lifestyle of the aristocratic class has the beautiful houses or villas that dot the village. While taking a stroll on the ColvaBeach, you have the beach shacks, water sports and various vendors. One can part-take in various beach activities or you could just enjoy the sun set in its mesmerizing hues.

Whilst Colva succumbs to the needs of tourism with all its attractions such as the water sports that is positioned on the beach front with paragliding and regular dolphin watching trips, Colva still maintains its local feel with its active fishing community. One will see fishermen bring in their haul in the early mornings and also have heaps of fish & fish nets drying along the road side.

As one enters Colva, you could say it is the Calangute of the south. At one point of time, Colva was merely an empty, peaceful & serene Beach, but now with the inflow of tourist Colva is becoming highly populated with Indian as well as International tourist. Once in Colva you will see various stalls, shops selling a variety of products, artifacts etc. You also find a variety of pubs, restaurants and food stalls all along the way right up to the beach offering various cuisines.

Apart from the beach itself, the other main attraction for the tourists is the “Menino Jesus” statue at the local church of Our Lady of Mercy founded in 1630. The church lies in the village square. The church in Colva is famous for its annual religious event-Fama of Menino Jesuse (Child Jesus)-since the 17th century. The predominantly Catholic community celebrates it on the third Monday of October every year. It is one of Goa’s most popular feasts and a big fair is held on the occasion at Colva. It is an event not to be missed if you are visiting during the period.Colva beach at sunset

Accommodation in Colva is not an issue as there are many options, from luxury hotels to motels to rooms, as per everyone wants. Though during the peak season it can really get crowded and along with that the rates also increase.

Colva is quite a spectacle, for those who prefer the quieter scenes, this is a perfect picnic spot.

By Train

The nearest railway station is Margao, which is 39kms from Colva.

By Bus

Frequent state buses go to and from other parts of Goa, but if you’re traveling a longer distance, you need to change buses. A bus from Margao costs around Rs.10–15.

By Taxi

Prepaid taxi from Margao would be around Rs.200-300, depending on your bargaining skills.

Reasonable accommodation

Take any road going towards the beach from the main road and find a bunch of places to sleep as you approach the beach. If you choose a smaller road you’re likely to find cheaper places.
