VAGATOR BEACH – A Scenic Beauty

The lush greenery all around, the swaying palms and aquamarine water of the Arabian Sea of Vagator Beach takes your breath away. Vagator beach resembles a crescent as it meets the Chapora estuary. This beach boasts of white sand that are beautifully contrasted with black rocks. The soft white sands, the black lava rocks, the coconut palms, the lush green landscape, nature playing its own music, and the sea turning from aquamarine to emerald green is how Vagator is usually described.

Vagator Beach is the northernmost beach of Bardez Taluka, Goa. It is located on the opposite bank of the Chapora River from Morjim in Pernem. Vagator is located approximately a one hour drive from the Dabolim Airport. The nearest railway station is at Tivim. Vagator is at a distance of 9 km from Mapusa, and 22 km far from the state capital Panaji. There are frequent buses to Panaji and Mapusa from Vagator.

As you face the sea, on your right is North Vagator Beach (Big Vagator) and on your left Ozran Beach, more commonly known as Little Vagator Beach.  The secluded and incredibly beautiful beach is the “Little Vagator” and is a short walk away from Big Vagator. At Little Vagator, down a steep path, is the stone sculpture of Shiva (an artwork of anonymous sculptor from the hippie era.) Beautiful and often fairly quiet, Big Vagator is perhaps best appreciated for the Chapora Fort, where stunning views of the surrounding coast makes the climb a must!

Vagator Beach has dramatic red cliffs looking down on the shore and two fresh water springs within a stone’s throw of the sea. Vagator is a relaxed, comparatively undeveloped resort that appeals to travelers with time on their hands.

Vagator Beach is close to a variety of hotels, with choices such as The Banyan Soul and Casa Palacio Siolim House Hotel. The other attraction at Vagator is the Portuguese built Chapora fort.  It was built in 1717, which was later taken twice from the Portuguese by the Marathas. Climb up for the sweeping coastal views. Vagator Beach is one of the prettiest beaches in North Goa. Lined with palm trees and secluded coves, it’s very laid back – at least during the day. At night, it comes to life with parties. There are a number of places playing to a dance & trance crowd during the tourist season. These include: Nine Bar located just above Little Vagator, Hilltop (a little back from Little Vagator) and Primrose back towards Big Vagator beach.

Vagator’s calm surf makes it perfect for swimming. It is also much less developed than Candolim and Calangute beaches. There are also Watersports Activities like banana boat rides, Para-sailing, scuba diving, speed boat rides.

The two fresh water bubbling springs just near the shore make for a spectacular sight. One is located close to the North Vagator Beach and the other is located on Ozrant Beach.  A desultory collection of ramshackle farmhouses and picturesque old Portuguese bungalows scattered around a network of leafy lanes, the Vagator village is entered at the east via a branch off the Mapusa Road. Take a walk in the tranquil surroundings of Vagator village.

Spend some time on the cliffs overlooking the beach for a spectacular view. Sunsets on Vagator are beautiful, and the rocky headlands make for a dramatic sea scape. Enjoy a walk on the beach, as the sun goes down.
